Why page-level sitemap checks matter

A sitemap can be perfectly valid XML and still send mixed indexing signals. Google recommends listing the fully qualified canonical URLs that you want to appear in search results. A URL that redirects, returns an error, or explicitly says noindex is therefore worth reviewing before it remains in a sitemap.

Canonical annotations are different: a canonical link is a signal, not a guarantee that Google will choose that URL. This checker reports a canonical pointing somewhere else as a conflict to investigate rather than claiming that the sitemap URL cannot be indexed.
